I find that these mods are the best:

  • Take your time Ultimate - (customizable one; this is a great base mod, I set all the max cost and extreme era scaling so it is long long game.. I find if I play with out it, by the time I march over to attack, we are at the next era)... I customized this mod, I am using the 1000 sql for World era with my own setting, I used x35.
  • More great person and GP cost (even with TYT ultimate at max settings, because my games are so long, and I play on large map, the Great Persons can be bought or won way too easily. I customized this mod, I set all the Great Persons higher, with Ancient era starting at 240.. 300... 400.. 600..1000...2000..3400...5000
  • No more AI city spam (higher pop and more production required for a settler) - go to the mod folder and customize the xml file. I used Set Cost="2500" PopulationCost="19" PrereqPopulation="20" CostProgressionParam1="500".
  • Balanced Religious settlement (no settler from pantheon so that one is not broken with my "no more AI city spam")
  • Agri Revolution (makes it so tiles food amount is one less, this is far more realistic as you will have to farm... many other changes too to the tech and civic trees and tiles which I love).. I customized this mod, I needed to add the new honey resource with less food yield.
  • Civ 5 hills (actually Civ IV hills... hills should be production, not food)
  • Gold Deflation (district buildings and stuff cost gold, this prevents having too many units)
  • Pre-ancient units cost gold (prevents having too many units in early era)
  • Radiant strong cities (prevents early conquest)
  • Stop steamrolling city states (prevents early conquest of city states)
  • True Zero Disasters (had to remove disasters unfortunately, the yields increase do not make it dangerous to settle in a disastrous area, (in fact, quite the opposite!))
  • Nerfed Barbarians (you have less gold with high maintenance costs, less cities = more open areas on map, so no way to stop the camps from spawning constantly, its not even, hard, just annoying...)) I customized this one.. using 1, 6, 12, 3 settings.

I love to play on a huge map with different other players so they are all unique and you have to pick your fights carefully and play with more strategy. I like a huge map with lots of room so that it's not "plop down a city wherever there's a free tile" but you have to look at the map carefully and play to your civ's advantages. I don't want each turn to take too long with having sooooo many units from city states and other AI as well as your units to defend, so that is why I make it so it's expensive to maintain your units. I also don't want too much war in the game.

Regarding other start settings, in TYT Ultimate, I turned down the Era score points (instead of calculated, try the max X the base cost.. used the 3X) because it's too much points otherwise and not realistically able to get all of them. I picked abundant resources so there's more strategy on founding cities, you should pick the max amount of tiles that make sense for your civ.
